A Life Alert notification sent firefighters to a home at 41 Post N Rail Avenue in Plymouth around 5:24 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey reports.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from a single-story, multi-family home. A video posted by Plymouth Fire Buff on Twitter show flames shooting from the roof of the home.

Firefighters rescued one adult woman from the burning home who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another adult, a male, was pronounced dead at the scene, Ostroskey said. His identity was not released.

Three other people escaped, one of whom was taken to the hospital with less serious injuries. Two Plymouth firefighters suffered minor injuries as well, according to Ostroskey.

“On behalf of the Plymouth Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this morning’s tragedy,” said Plymouth Fire Neil J. Chief Foley. “Our thoughts are with them right now. To the rest of our community, I want to emphasize that working smoke alarms appear to have prevented an even greater loss of life.”

The Massachusetts Red Cross was onsite helping the remaining residents. Initial investigation suggests that the fire was not suspicious, Ostroskey said.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
